I think the reason it is not uploaded in 1080p is because it is not broadcast in 1080p. HBO HD is 1080i, which is the same number of pixels as 1080i, just de-interlaced. The only way to get HBO original shows in 1080p prior to Blu-ray release is HBO Go. I'm not sure if there is a way to record from that.

NO, not 1080i. Fox and all ABC channels are in 720P. Not really much between them, frankly.

there's a 1080i release of ep1 released by CtrlHD release group : The.Newsroom.S03E01.1080i.HDTV.MPEG2.DD5.1-CtrlHD.ts

...you can google it. though, it's ~5 Gb, not worth it IMO, better to wait for Blu-ray.
